Seeing Clearly, Seeing Christ

Malcolm Foley

We often hear the words “judge not,” quoted from Matthew 7. But is that the end of the story? Foley unpacks the force of Jesus’ words in this passage, urging his listeners to remember that this passage is not simply about avoiding judgment, but it is about “repent[ing] before you rebuke.” We often “choose blindness” when it comes to our own sin; Foley reminds us that in this Lenten season we must examine ourselves and our own sin. How can we do this with faithfulness and confidence? Through Jesus, the one who knows our sin, knows the temptation of our sin, resisted those temptations, and who unites himself to us, through the Spirit, in our salvation. He is the one who “extends to us amazing grace,” inviting us into the new life he offers.
